Are you following us on Twitter yet? If you are, you may have seen an article we linked titled “Personal care amongst sectors found to have violated US toxicity law.” The article says that according to a report by the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH) council, the personal care sector is one of several industries found to have violated U.S. state toxics laws by allowing the heavy metals lead and cadmium in their imported packaging. Luckily, there is little to no risk to consumers who come in contact with this packaging. The problems arise when the packaging is thrown away and ends up in a landfill where the lead and cadmium can end up in the environment. And that causes trouble for everyone.
Unfortunately, imported packaging is not the only source of lead and cadmium in our environment. Another major source of these heavy metals
is e-waste. When electronics are not disposed of properly when they reach their end of life, they can leach all sorts of heavy metals into the environment. Not only is this bad for our planet, it can put companies who engage in irresponsible disposal methods at regulatory and security risk.
If you aren’t sure if your company’s electronics disposal process adheres to EPA guidelines, or if you can’t prove it with documentation, contact EquipNet today about our environmental recycling program.
