Hear What’s Poppin’ in January
Are you ready for one of the most pop-ular days of the year, literally? That’s right; bubble wrap has its very own appreciation day, which takes place this month on January 25th.
It wasn’t until 1957 when two engineers, Al Fielding and Marc Chavannes, were looking to create a new fad of textured wallpaper – Yes, can you imagine that bubble wrap was originally intended to be the new feng shui design on your living room walls?!
As you can imagine, Fielding’s and Chavannes’s original idea did not take off as they expected, but luckily for us, they did not give up
there.
The engineers set out to find another use for their bubbled material and the first alternative they considered was for insulation purposes, primarily for greenhouses. Once again, the two found themselves in a failed attempt.
It wasn’t until almost three years later that a marketer at Sealed Air (manufacturer of bubble wrap), Frederick Bowers, finally discovered the ultimate purpose of bubble wrap.
It was October in 1959 and IBM had officially announced their new 1401 variable word length computer. It was then that Frederick realized the bubble wrap would be a perfect solution for protective packaging material needed to ship the computers. Bowers pitched his million-dollar idea to IBM, and the rest is history.
It’s been close to 60 years since the founding of bubble wrap, and to this day it is still widely used, whether it’s for packaging needs, diminishing stress or purely for self entertainment. Bubble wrap has greatly taken off since its origin, and you can now find virtual bubble wrap popping games online, imitation bubble wrap cell phone cases and key chains, bubble wrap calendars and much more.
Get ready to celebrate on January 25th and indulge in your favorite bubble wrap popping activities!
