Tips for Buying Used Equipment

As we at EquipNet well know, purchasing used machinery or equipment can provide companies with significant cost savings and benefits, and through EquipNet’s Procurement Services, we pride ourselves on sourcing high-quality, pre-owned assets for our clients. However when purchasing used equipment, there is always the possibility that the equipment does not perform to your needs or expectations. A recent white paper released by Packaging World, “Tips on buying used equipment,” written by George Albrecht, vice president of sales at Axon Corp., provides some useful tips if you’re buying used equipment for your company. Here are a few of the key tips offered in the white paper:

Understand that standard equipment may have been customized for specific applications. While models are based on standard platforms, each individual unit may have been, and likely was, custom designed for a particular application and plant environment. You may need to determine the costs associated with customizing the equipment for your needs.

Feel free to contact the manufacturer. Be ready to provide a model and serial number to find out information about the equipment’s original design intent and age, and you might be able to find answers to questions about whether the original design can be economically converted to meet your specific needs. You may also be able to find additional information about a specific piece of equipment, including the age of the equipment, maintenance records, replacement parts, and what it was used for.

Be cautious if the pre-owned machine is 10 years old or older. While it’s very likely the piece of equipment will be fine, you need to take a few factors into consideration of it is more than 10 years old. For instance, the equipment’s electronics may

no longer be supported by the manufacturer. And, you need to consider the wear and tear on the piece of equipment and its parts.
